Gypsy setting, often called flush setting, is the technique used to set a round and brilliant cut faceted stone into and flush with a metal surface.
This one day course is an exciting opportunity to be introduced to the principle and application of gypsy setting. You will learn how to make your own bespoke setting tools, and produce a range of flat and curved samples to practice flush setting.
This introductory course will give you an insight into how to approach the medium through a series of demonstrations followed by individual practice.
You will be introduced to gypsy setting techniques for round stones, in which stones are set level with the surface of a metal form. There will be an opportunity to create your own bespoke setting tool, practise this technique on a flat and curved surface, and on your own designs. You will learn about the relationship between the size of stones and the thickness of metal, and the principle of stone hardness and how this relates to this technique.
Introduction to materials and tools will be taught as a group. Thereafter, students will receive individual advice for specific items
We will supply tools and consumable material such as cubic zirconias and copper sheet for practice.
If you wish to apply this technique to a personal project, you should bring it along with you, including metal and gemstones.
Please bring suitable clothing and footwear for Health & Safety reasons
Great course! Lots of fun to learn 2 new techniques. Aurelie is a very good teacher, and I learned a lot in just one day. Would definitely recommend it!
A lovely workshop with very clear teaching techniques. A nice size group for one to one and independent work. Just the right amount of time to do some test pieces or apply the technique to my own work. Thank you 🙂
Aurelie is an amazing teacher, learnt so much in one day, left with a spring in my step. Confident to start adding gypsy settings to my designs
