JEWELLERY DIPLOMA – LEVEL 2 (30 WEEKS)

Course Outline

The level 2 Diploma course is a continuation from our level 1 Diploma. It is suitable for those with good basic skills and an understanding of the design process. An interview is required to join this course.

Students will learn techniques including casting, collet stone setting, Etching, and cold connections. You will also learn how to use trade services, how to plan your time and work to a budget.

Building on your experience of using a sketch book, you will further develop your design skills and ability to present your ideas. You will also take part in a renowned jewellery design competition.

This course will enable you to proceed to working as an independent jeweller or to apply for a course in Higher education.

What will we learn?

The course is divided into a number of modules, each designed to further enhance and develop your design and making skills.

You will make an etched brooch with pin and a bracelet with cast components. You will learn about the technique of kuem boo and cold connections. You will also learn how to make more advanced stone settings, enter a design competition and complete a set commisssion brief for your final piece.

You will be introduced to business skills, how to work with trade services, and learn to work independently to plan and cost your work.

You will be supported throughout all aspects of the course, and will be required to present your work for assessment twice during the course, and once again at the end. All finished pieces will be exhibited in a final show of work.

What will I need to bring?

You will have access to all our tools & equipment and you will be provided some materials including silver wire, base metal sheet, wax for carving and gold foil for keum boo. You will be required to purchase most of your own metal for set projects and a few sundries. Your tutor will inform you of what you will need to provide and where to get it.

You will be required to attend at least 90% of classes to complete the course, and will be expected to complete homework assignments regularly.
